03.25 NEWSLETTER : Terracotta’s Surprising Versatility

OUR CUSTOM ITALIAN TERRACOTTA

You may think of terracotta as red Spanish-style roof tiles, but the material has a number of applications well beyond that familiar look. Plus, terracotta has the benefit of being fire-resistant and non-combustible — all too relevant these days. Here are three recent CoorItalia projects that make varied use of this versatile, sustainably sourced material.

A SINUOUS HOUSE IN SILICON VALLEY

CoorItalia crafted the glazed terracotta cladding for this project in Northern California, designed by Snøhetta and Nicole Hollis Design and recently featured in Architectural Digest. The bespoke white, triangular tiles installed along the house’s unique curved exterior, “lend a mottled pattern and three-dimensional character” to the façades, in AD’s words. We also supplied the primary bath’s carved vanity and kitchen slabs, both in Calacatta Bianco Gioia, along with the paving, wall caps, and steps, all crafted from Bateig Blue stone.

SK1N SHINGLES FOR A COASTAL HOME

This contemporary project in Corona del Mar, California, features our SK1N terracotta cladding. Although it resembles a classic wooden shingle, this material holds up better to a coastal climate and is considered a fire-resistant and non-combustible building material. For this home, designed by Geoff Sumich Design, CoorItalia supplied shingles hand-crafted in Italy.

CORSO BRICK FOR AN ASPEN HOME

Our incredibly versatile Corso terracotta bricks give this residential project in downtown Aspen a distinctive style, both indoors and out. Corso is considered both fire-resistant and non-combustible; its thin, elongated shape — seen here as both full bricks and custom-cut veneers lends a contemporary look. Moreover, both Corso and SK1N are manufactured sustainably in Italy — providing beauty, safety, and eco-sensitivity all in one package.
