Limestone
LIMESTONE : THE HISTORY
Appreciation and use of Limestone in architecture can be traced back thousands of years. Used to build the ancient Egyptian pyramids and a popular choice for flooring in 7000 BE Israel and construction in the 300 BCE Roman Empire, Limestone has remained a versatile and desirable building material throughout history. During Henry III’s reign over England in 1240, the inside and outside of the Great Tower of London was whitened using a lime mixture that painted over the stonework to create the coloring. The lime’s calcium carbonate gave a bright white appearance to the tower, restoring its splendor. Repaired in a similar way, the Great Wall of China was reconstructed with lime mortar to cement the stonework into place and restore its sturdy beauty during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644.
Today we see demand for limestone flooring, wall cladding, countertops, as well as dimensional items like fireplaces and fountains. As long as the material is properly treated, there is little it can not be used for.
