FILM ARCHIVE AND PRESERVATION CENTER
Cooritalia was commissioned to produce 42,000 square feet of custom roof tiles for the Film Archive and Preservation Center in Santa Clarita, CA. Our existing relationships with vendors and factories in Europe, expertise in natural stone resource, and experience managing small and large cut to size projects made us uniquely prepared for this project.
Inspiration for these roof tiles was drawn from historical details and Corinthian style found in the Neoclassical Greek buildings like the Stoa of Attalos. While following historical references for inspiration, new designs from sketches provided by the architect and client were simultaneously incorporated to create the handmade roof elements.
After research, several rounds of shop drawing reviews, mockups, clay color tests, and a visit to the selected Italian terracotta factory for approvals, production commenced. The result was a collection of 47,000 terracotta pieces comprised of five different elements to replicate an architecturally significant look to a modern-day building. Roofing pieces included flat pans, angular shaped cap, a double ridge cap, double ridge pans, and 1,100 hand-painted antefix pieces.
