BIG SUR Bronze A-FRAME
“Admirers call it the most beautiful house on the most beautiful site in the U.S.” Time Magazine
They were referring to Nat Owing’s (of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill fame) A-frame house perched 600ft up on Big Sur’s dramatic coastline. Originally built in 1958 the same Time Article described the problems Owing had to consider and overcome – “The land is periodically shaken by earthquakes, battered by 80-m.p.h. winds; rainfall can total 72 in. in three months, and termites abound”.
Following his widow Margaret’s death the house was bought and underwent extensive restoration. We started working on this project because the architect was looking for windows and doors that would enhance this unique house and the technical qualities to resist in such a harsh environment. The custom made Bronze (burnished brass) units ended up being the right fit.
